What is Magenta Studio?
Magenta Studio is a free MIDI plugin for Ableton Live that applies Google's machine learning models to music generation and manipulation, developed by Google's Magenta research team. Built on open-source tools, it integrates directly into Ableton Live 10.1 Suite or later as a Max for Live device, enabling users to generate, transform, and extend MIDI clips using neural networks trained on millions of musical patterns and real drummer performances.
The plugin contains five core tools. Continue extends existing drum beats or melodies up to 32 measures using recurrent neural networks to predict likely subsequent notes while respecting key signatures and timing. Generate produces novel 4-bar MIDI phrases from scratch using a Variational Autoencoder trained on diverse musical data, useful for breaking creative blocks. Interpolate morphs between two input clips by mapping them to a compressed musical feature space and generating intermediate variations across adjustable steps. Groove applies humanized timing and velocity to quantized drum clips by learning from 15 hours of real drummer performances, functioning as a machine-learning alternative to standard humanization. Drumify generates drum accompaniments based on input rhythms—from basslines, melodies, or tapped patterns—using the same drummer dataset as Groove.
All tools feature a temperature slider controlling output randomness: higher values yield more variation and unpredictability, while lower values produce conservative predictions. The plugin works exclusively with MIDI tracks in Ableton's Session View and includes specific limitations: melody input accepts only monophonic (single-note) sequences, and drum input maps to nine instruments via standardized MIDI note numbers. Users simply select clips, adjust parameters, and generate outputs that populate new clip slots for further editing.
