Hookpad is a web-based songwriting software that combines music theory instruction with AI-assisted composition tools, made by Hooktheory. The platform lets musicians write chords, melodies, and full arrangements using color-coded visual feedback, MIDI keyboard input, and an AI copilot called Aria that suggests harmonic and melodic ideas in real time.

The core workflow centers on a key-aware interface where users see every chord that works in their chosen key, eliminating "wrong notes" and reducing trial-and-error composition. Melodies appear color-coded by scale degree to show harmonic function; chords display with key-agnostic visual systems for instant harmonic context. Users can upload audio tracks to build around existing recordings, input MIDI from keyboards, and access a built-in library of 500+ instruments for arrangement. The software includes "Magic Chords"—AI suggestions for the next chord based on analysis of over 75,000 songs in Hooktheory's TheoryTab database—plus melody guides, harmonic complexity metrics, and browsable chord progressions drawn from hit songs. Aria, the generative AI assistant, suggests chords, melodies, or both to fit seamlessly into projects in progress.
