What is FLUX?
FLUX is a production-grade AI image generation and editing model developed by Black Forest Labs, a frontier AI research lab focused on visual intelligence. The platform generates photorealistic images up to 4 megapixels and supports multi-reference control, allowing users to blend styles, compositions, and details from multiple input images into a single output.
The FLUX model family includes multiple variants optimized for different use cases. FLUX.2 [klein] delivers sub-second inference times on capable hardware for interactive visual workflows. FLUX.2 [pro] balances speed and quality for production environments. FLUX.2 [max] provides the highest fidelity output for demanding creative applications. Each variant maintains the core capability of understanding complex prompts and executing precise image manipulations, from photorealistic generation to stylistic transformations and targeted editing tasks like object replacement and cross-image attribute matching.
Users access FLUX through three deployment options: a free web-based playground requiring no coding; an API for integration into applications and workflows at scale; and open-weight model downloads for local deployment, fine-tuning, and customization on proprietary infrastructure. The API is designed to handle production workloads and scales horizontally. Organizations can license open weights for full control over deployment and model adaptation. Enterprise customers can contact sales for volume licensing and custom configurations.
The platform supports conditional image generation with detailed prompts, style transfer across multiple references, image inpainting and editing, and composition control. Users submit text descriptions or image references, and the model synthesizes outputs matching specified parameters. Common applications include product visualization, concept art, marketing asset creation, and design iteration.
Black Forest Labs released FLUX.2 in late 2025 following a $300 millio
