What is Clipdrop?

Clipdrop is an AI-powered image editing suite developed by Stability AI (now owned by Jasper.ai) that automates common photo cleanup and enhancement tasks through a web interface and API. The platform includes background removal, object deletion, image upscaling, relighting, text removal, uncropping, and text-to-image generation capabilities.

The tool functions through browser-based uploads with no installation required for basic use. Background removal isolates subjects with pixel-level accuracy, while the Cleanup feature uses inpainting algorithms to remove objects, people, text, and defects from images. The Image Upscaler enlarges photos by 2x or 4x resolution while recovering detail and reducing noise. Relight adjusts lighting conditions across an image, and Uncrop expands images to different aspect ratios. The Universal Resizer optimizes images for specific social media platforms. A desktop plugin integrates with Adobe Photoshop for local processing.

Clipdrop operates on a freemium model, offering all core features at no cost with downloadable HD outputs. Commercial use of generated images is permitted under their terms. The platform also provides a REST API for developers to embed these capabilities directly into applications and products, with documentation and pricing available through the Jasper API. This API access enables batch processing and programmatic integration rather than manual uploads.

The product originated from InitML, founded in 2020 by interaction designer Cyril Diagne, full-stack engineer Jonathan Blanchet, and product executive Damien Henry. InitML joined Y Combinator's 2021 Winter batch, raised $1.5M, and was acquired by Stability AI in February 2023 before transferring to Jasper.ai in February 2024. The founding team brought backgrounds spanning Google Arts & Culture, Google Research, full-stack web development, and VR (Google Cardboard).
