What is Apple Siri?

Siri is a voice assistant developed by Apple that processes natural language commands across the company's ecosystem of devices. Activated by saying "Hey Siri" or pressing a dedicated button, it executes tasks on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, HomePod, Apple Vision Pro, and CarPlay-equipped vehicles without requiring manual input.

The assistant handles communications (calls, texts, FaceTime, WhatsApp messaging), smart home control (lighting, temperature, locks, cameras), navigation and maps integration, music and podcast playback, calendar and reminder management, knowledge queries (weather, currency conversion, definitions, calculations), and device operations (Find My, Do Not Disturb, photos, QR scanning). Sequential requests can be chained together without repeating the activation phrase. Integration with Apple Intelligence, introduced in 2024, adds on-device machine learning capabilities that learn user preferences while maintaining offline processing for audio requests.

Siri's architecture emphasizes privacy through on-device processing: audio requests remain local to the device unless explicitly shared with Apple servers, and query history is not associated with Apple Account identities. The system uses Apple's Neural Engine for processing, preventing advertiser access to user data. This differs from competitors that typically transmit audio to remote servers for processing.

The assistant integrates natively with Apple's HomeKit smart home platform, Apple Maps, Music, TV+, News, Stocks, Health, Reminders, Calendar, Contacts, and third-party apps that support Siri shortcuts. Users can create custom automation routines through the Shortcuts app. Siri is included free across all compatible Apple devices; there is no separate subscription cost, though Apple Intelligence features require devices running iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, or macOS Sequoia.
